Pussy Riot Update

Well, according to this report at The Guardian, prosecutors in a Moscow court case are demanding three years in prison for members of Pussy Riot. This is shameful persecution of political speech pure and simple as this post at The New York Times makes clear. For additional background have a visit here to Mother Jones. Amnesty International are running a campaign on their behalf - you can find a link here and there is a webpage for supporters here.

I think there is a lot of hipocrisy about this. In USA there are people charged for many years because they helped inmigrants in the mexican border.
And in this case I think these girls insulted some persons.

"The altered lyrics included praying to Theotokos, the Orthodox name for the Virgin Mary, to 'chase Putin out'. Another part of the song included calling the Patriarch of the Russian Orthodox Church a 'bitch'. Most controversially, the 'Sanctus Hymn' became 'shit, shit, shit of Lord God'.

Now arrested, all three women face lengthy jail sentences for 'hooliganism motivated by religious hatred or hostility'. In the West, such a charge is more commonly referred to along the lines of 'inciting racial or religious hatred'."

You are right. The US punishes people for ridiculous things. And it administers "justice" in ways that are skewed by race, class and gender. So what?

None of that means that the Russians should be prosecuting this case or that the judge ought to be so blatantly prejudiced.

To the best of my knowledge at no point have any of these women "incited" anyone to do anything to believers. They have poked fun at the authoritarian elites.

And, frankly, the point is that insulting or offending someone is not a crime. I am offended by the way religious or "patriotic" people thrust their beliefs into my face all the time. But I don't think they should be arrested for it.
