Aperture (Fall 2006)

The latest issue of Aperture is on the newsstands. I do not subscribe, but picked up this issue because it has contributions from Rebecca Solnit and David Levi Strauss, two of the vey best commentators on photography around.

I once started a non profit site (infact it was at my loss of time and money) called africanaperture.com (now africanimagery.com - though I don't update it anymore). Aperture's lawyers sent me a cease and desist letter, claimimg I was encroaching on their turf. Most of the free online lawyers I spoke to said that aperture.org couldn't do anything since I was non profit and intended to stay that way. But anyway, I just didn't want to bother with having to think about it. I sent them a long letter questioning there integrity; did they really have the interests of the photographers in mind? I then offered to sell them the domain, they declined. I let the domain expire and I bought africanimagery.com just to be clear of them.

Pillip: I am not a big fan of the magazine or the Foundaiton. They seem pretty much interested in the sstaus quo (which of course includes them as a central player). Generally they do not do too much that will rock the boat. I have not had any personal dealings with them and am sorry to learn of yours!

For a major photography magazine, they hardly have any photos on their website. All they offer are a few measly flash galleries. That, my friends, is the epitome of arrogance!

I recently bought, 'Between the Eyes', by David Levi Straus, indeed he is a very absorbing and enlightening writer.
